Symbols to the Cosmos

The buildings under this subheading are slightly different from the previous. They serve predominantly as public spaces and are not in either the capital or a financial district of their respective countries. They, however, both exhibit the use of cultural/religious symbols and are buildings that aim to preserve cultural heritage.

Symbolism to Create Culture

Hindu practices did not see popularity in China, the country more readily adopting both Buddhism and Islam during the Silk Roads (Klimkeit et al. n.d.). However, due to Buddhism's connections to India and Hinduism, certain aspects of the religion were adopted in the country.

The Lotus Building and People's Park is a lotus-shaped structure located in Wujin, China. Studio505, the architects behind the project, originally intended to build a symbol of culture into the developing city. The building acts as a meeting venue and a public sculpture, created in the shape of the pure and enlightened lotus on a pond. The lotus is a symbol with a rich history in China. This building is in this category because of its structure. It almost resembles a more ostentatious version of the Lotus Temple located in India. With its bright lights and multicolored windows, it is a monument and reminder to the people of important principles.
